Always look for signs of an infestation
Rats and mice breed very quickly, so if you find one of these critters scurrying inside your kitchen, its friends and family may not be far behind. There may be a nest with somewhere in your attic, garage or crawlspace. Familiarize yourself with the marks rodents leave in the house such as their droppings, nesting material, and gnaw signs, and pay special attention to your pets that will often be irritated and angry when these pests invade their territory.
Clean and organize your attic and gain more space
Go through your stuff and sort it into piles (e.g. keep, donate and trash). Put the bulkier items at the back, then work your way to the stairs. Half empty boxes will only create more clutter, so either opt for smaller ones, or consolidate and label big ones. Also, consider using plastic containers - they are sturdier, last longer and better protect your belongings. While you’re at it, remove damaged insulation, clean and decontaminate the attic - or call us!
Use bags and tarp when removing insulation
Aside from protective gear like gloves and face masks, there's more items necessary to be able to safely remove insulation. Lay down a tarp or plastic under the area you'll be working to catch any pieces that may break off and fall. Also, have a bag on hand to put the insulation into and close up tightly. Doing so reduces the particles that can pollute the air and may cause health problems. This is particularly important with fiberglass, which can damage the lungs.
Check your attic for mold
Mold causes a range of issues for both your home's integrity, as well as the health of your family. It eats away at wood, can damage belongings, and spores can pollute your home's air and cause health issues. Look for signs of discoloration in your attic, such as dark spots that stand out compared to their surroundings. It may also appear to be other odd colors, such as green, white, or brown. The smell is usually also noticeably foul and a sign that it's present.
