When you know the signs you need to pay attention to, it’s easy to recognize a rodent infestation problem and nip it in the bud. The sooner you react the better, since these vermin can cause various diseases and even house fires!
Droppings Can Tell You Everything
Not only are the droppings a sure sign of rodent presence, but they will also help you determine the following: whether you have mice or rats, the size of infestation and the main site of their activity! You should know that mouse droppings are smaller than those of a rat and the more feces the bigger the infestation. Finally, the most active areas are the places where most of the droppings are, meaning - the best places to place traps! Old feces are dull and crumbly, and fresh ones are softer and shiny. One more thing - if the feces vary in size, it means you have both adult and juvenile rodents in your home.
Runways and Rub-Marks
Both mice and rats tend to use the same runways, and the continuous brushing against the walls will leave its mark. Grease and dirt on their fur transfer to the surfaces their bodies repeatedly touch, leaving an oily dark smudge. You can also look for rodent tracks: mouse feet are 3/8 inch or less, and rat feet are bigger, up to 1 inch! If you want to test for rodent activity, you can sprinkle talc or some other powdery substance and check the following day for fresh footprints.
Damage to Furniture and Wiring
Rodents actually have to gnaw at something hard in order to keep their teeth short. They will gnaw at walls to make their holes: mouse holes are small and clear-cut, whereas rats make large ones, with rough edges. Inspect your furniture for tooth marks because these pests will also chew on wood and plastic in order to shorten their teeth. You should check your electrical cables as well, because damaged wiring can cause house fires.
